To Dream the Impossible Dream

"What shone thus far above is here in us;
Bliss unattained our future's birthright is;
Beauty of our dim soul is amorous,
We are the heirs of infinite wide-nesses."

"The impossible is the hint of what shall be,
Mortal the door to immortality."

Seed Thought
Matt. 17:20 - "I tell you the truth, if you have
faith as small as a mustard seed, you can
say to this mountain, 'Move from here to
there' and it will move. Nothing will be
impossible for you."
by Larry Taylor

Some time ago I saw a movie, titled simply, "Rudy." It's the story of an ordinary boy,
growing up near Chicago, IL. His dream was to play football for Notre Dame; but, all around him
were naysayers who put him down and who told him his dream was foolish and  impossible.

Surprisingly, Rudy didn't give up his dream, and he didn't give in to those who tried to quench
his fire. He had passion, and shear will power. He refused to surrender his vision. And, one day
it happened.

I couldn’t help but relate Rudy's story to my own life. My story is not so heroic, and I don't mind
saying that I have not achieved fame or fortune. But, I have gone much further in life than I ever
thought was imaginable. I never dreamed that I would ever leave my little home town in Illinois,
join the war in Vietnam, go to college, marry my hometown sweetheart, have three great
children, earn a doctorate, and enter a fulfilling career of ministry and chaplaincy. But, I did
daydream as a kid, and something in me said I could carve out my own pathway.

Of course, there are some things that can become absurd and irrelevant in a made-up dream
world: I'll never play basketball like Michael Jordan did in his prime, and I doubt if I ever make as
much money as Bill Gates. Then again, I don’t have to have either of those things to be happy,
and isn’t that just the point?

Today, I can choose to maintain a positive attitude today, to live for today, to dream another
dream today. Who would have believed in the year I graduated from high school, 1967, that an
African American would be elected to become the forty-fourth President of the United States?

What is your dream?
